Master Shen-Long (sobriquet: Xiao-Yao 逍遙; courtesy names: Shen-Long 神龍, Tai-Yi 太一, Tai-Xuan 太玄, Tai-Chu 太初, so on and so forth) is an artist, calligrapher, writer, poet, philosopher and Buddhist master. As a Dhyana (Zen) Master and Patriarch and founder of the Enlightenment Mind School (覺能心宗), he has conducted many public talks on the essential Sutras of Buddhism, such as the Platform of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng 六祖壇經, the Heart Sutra 心經, the Surangama Sutra 楞嚴經 and the Vimalakirti Sutra 維摩詰經; as well as the key sutras of the Pure Land School—the Buddha Speaks of the Infinite Life Sutra 佛說大乘無量壽莊嚴清淨平等覺經, the Buddha Speaks of the Amitabha Sutra 佛說阿彌陀經, Essential Annotation on the Amitabha Sutra 彌陀經要解, the Chapter of Chanting Amitabha in Whole Completeness to Become Buddha by the Dashizhi Bodhisattva (Mahasthamaprapta) from the Surangama Sutra大勢至菩薩念佛圓通章, and more. He is also the only confirmed artist in history to combine the theory of enlightenment power and ability with artistic creation (覺能藝創).
As a multidisciplinary artist, he is a contemporary master of the classical Chinese literati perfections of poetry, painting and calligraphy. In his artwork, he works in a variety of styles, formats and techniques, including ink painting, oil painting, sculpture and photography, and his paintings can be viewed and displayed from both sides. Master Shen-Long’s artwork showcases the best features of the Chinese literati traditional three perfection of painting, poetry and calligraphy, and reimagines the history of Chinese painting in a unified expression. In his work, he blends both Chinese and Western ideas together into a new central idea of his own. He naturally employs traditional Chinese materials such as xuan paper, brush and ink, combined with Western abstract techniques and materials such as spray and canvas cloth—a happy marriage and crystallization of many years of artistic exploration and practice. Having already achieved this point, he paints and creates happily and without restraint, resulting in endless masterworks.
His most recent Buddhist publications include Wisdom of the Heart Sutra (2011), Amitabha (2013), and Prajna, Volumes I & II (2013), and the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch (2014).
