Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 26

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with, “Why are you back again today, you are taking a new lease on life again? It is because every time all transforms into the same condition and you cannot get out of this reincarnation. Therefore, this is a big problem, you need to have insight of being master of yourself.)

[ Sutra] To have perfect insight of being master of one’s self Bodhisattva                       

[經文] 觀自在菩薩

Commentary:

To have perfect insight is precisely what we have just talked about as “purified of defiling illusion”. After being purified of defiling illusion, then one can have perfect insight; if you are not purified, there is no way of having perfect insight. Therefore, having perfect insight is using your mind to see, and not using your physical eye. When your mind is clear, no confusion in all matters, and then you can see perfectly.

What do you see? You see the past, the present and the future.

In the other words, what are the secular problems? Because you are incapable to have perfect insight, you act impulsively and emotionally. If you cannot have perfect insight, you are unable being the master of yourself.

Think about this, in this kind of course of life, we all know that we must face death one day. If your head fixates with this death idea, you will feel unwell. You think that: “It is inevitable that there one day I will be finished, so now I better hurry up to accomplish some projects that need to be done, or need to be handled, and it is best to complete them quickly.” To me this kind of mind attitude expedites death.

I recall that there was once an eminent monk, who returned to this life and was still in his mother’s tummy.

He said: “I do not want to come here again.”

The mom then said to him: “You have not been born yet.”

He replied: “Yes, because all living beings suffer extremely.”

We have all heard about the Tibetan living Buddha that returned to this life, and many eminent monks of China that have returned to this life; they are all Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattva are enlightened living beings; they have already become enlightened and then come to help everyone to break delusions and achieve enlightenment.

This Bodhisattva who was in his mother’s tummy then already started to complain: “As all living beings suffer extremely, I have come here and may not necessarily be able to liberate everyone, but I have no choice, this is my vow pledge.”

This kind of Bodhisattva, truthfully speaking, was reborn based on their own compassionate vow. He is infinite compassionate and merciful.  Compassion and mercy are what average people speak about as being universal love, but this is deeper than universal love.

Do you know why? It is because he is already selfless. He also has no others.  He is purified of thoroughly.

If you still have the thinking of “I”, still have thoughts of “I” sacrifice to consecrate, then these attachment and afflictions will approach.  If you are without anything, then you become normal. Therefore, the Sutra text of Heart Sutra in the end as it states: 

Because nothing can lay hold of, the Bodhisattva through reliance on Prajna Paramita (perfection of transcendent wisdom) hence to have no hindrance in one’s mind. There is no hindrance in mind, hence one is not panic and fear, keeps cognitive distortion, dream and imagination far beyond.

〔經文〕觀自在菩薩

這個「」就是我們剛剛講的清淨。清淨才能。你不清淨,沒辦法。所以「」的本身,右邊有個「見」;用你的心去見,不是用肉眼。你的心清楚,凡事不迷惑,才能見到。

你見到什麼?見到過去、現在、末來。

換句話說,世俗的問題到底是什麼?因為你無法「」,你不到。你是衝動性的、情緒性的,你不能「」,就不能「自在」。

想一想,人在這樣的生活過程裡,我們都知道有一天要面臨死亡。你要是腦筋弄個死亡,你就難受;你就想我總有一天要完蛋,我現在趕快把一些該做、該如何的,最好快快完成。我看這種心態,是加速死亡。

我記得有一位高僧,他轉世在母親肚子裡的時候,

他就講:「我不想再來這。」

母親就說:「你還沒出生呢?」

他說:「對。」

他又說:「眾生太苦了。」

我們都知道,西藏的這些活佛轉世,我們中國這些高僧也有很多轉世。他們同樣都是菩薩。菩薩就是覺悟的眾生。他們已經覺悟,然後再來幫助大家破迷開悟。

這菩薩到母親肚子裡,就開始抱怨眾生太苦了,我來這裡不一定能夠度,但沒辦法這是我的願。這樣的菩薩,說真話,叫乘願再來。他是大慈悲。慈悲就是一般人講的博愛,但這個比博愛深。

你知道為什麼?他沒有自己的。他也沒有別人。徹底的清淨。

你還有我,我犧牲奉獻,這執著、煩惱就來臨。你要什麼都沒有了,你什麼都正常。【心經】最後不是講:「以無所得故,菩堤薩埵依般若波羅密多故,心無罣礙,無罣礙故,無有恐怖,遠離顛倒夢想。」
