Explanation of the Title: Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 32

(Last week we ended with; “They are unaware of the awesomeness of planting the “cause”. At their causal stage of cultivation, they merely want to become an Arhat, or only to exit the Threefold Worlds (Triloka – the universe is divided into three worlds of karmic rebirth as desire, form and formless), or to become Bodhisattva. They did not pledge a vow to become Buddha. Even if they pledged a vow to become Buddha, they want to use methods of progressing gradually and slowly through countless existence of world-periods.”)

 

Genuinely, when chanting (or mindfulness) Amitabha to become Buddha, there is only one teaching, precisely Amitabha – the method of chanting (or mindfulness) Amitabha.

Chanting (or mindfulness) Amitabha is the cause, becoming Amitabha is the effect.

It is the ruling of cause and effect. It is not that one has any problems. If eminent monks can turn their way of thinking and truly chant (or mindfulness) Amitabha, then everyone can become Buddha in one’s life. One will have attainment in three months’ time.

Therefore, if you are without wisdom, you absolutely cannot see.

What is wisdom? Knowing Buddha’s phenomena.

An average person is very narrow-minded, the sphere of cognition is a complicated development that never progressed anywhere. One can neither be disillusioned with all nor can let go, and it is only after being adequately provided for.  A mindset like this cannot do cultivation.

Why does this not work? This is not cultivation; this is greediness. Greed for life and fear of death in this world, is how this world is created. Our world will go through four phases: “creation, duration, dissolution, and state of being dissolved”. Presently we are in the “duration” stage but it is getting worse and worse, and it will not be long before this world will be dissolved.

The life span of this earth is 100 billion years, and some periods of time are not suitable for human living. In the dinosaur era, could humans live?

Our human history is only a little more than 10,000 years old, and our earth life span is 100 billion years, so what happened during the time in between? Like the way we now look at the planets of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, all lying in waste.

There are many different beings there we cannot see. There are intelligent beings in the universe beyond the earth and beings of the spiritual world practicing cultivation there, even on the moon too. If today you have a divine eye with unlimited vision, then you will see different beings and different Buddha Bodhisattva expounding the teaching to help all beings there. Amongst all those planets, the most serious contamination place is our earth.

Why? Due to our attachment to materiality and physical body, we cause serious karma.

What is “karma”? It is the ways of thinking, ways of looking at things, saying things and doing things. We attach the most importance by means of “greed, aversion, ignorance, arrogance and suspicion”. Even if you want to be purified of defiling illusion you cannot entirely. Let me provide an example, if you want to cultivate during your mind activation with arising thought, can you be in conversation with others with your mind in a state of tranquility, exempt from all external sensations?

Then, you also know what the other person is saying clearly, can you be this way?

I think you can. However, you cannot have this kind of condition occur because you cannot be attached to this kind of feeling, this is the first step.

Are you able to stay home and do nothing, to have body and mind purified without defilement all day long, without activating a thought?  No, I do not think you can achieve this because:

You do not have the enlightenment habit.

You do not have the cultivation practice habit.

You do not have the right (Buddha) understanding and right (Buddha) views also.

Understanding and viewing with regards to the Buddha teaching as the enlightenment teaching, this kind of knowledge, wisdom and capability is what you do not have.

What is viewing? You are able to use your omniscience penetrative ability, that can penetrate through phenomena of materiality and spirituality, and you can understand all phenomena.

Therefore, it would be better for you to choose one way, to remove your afflictions during your mind activation with thought arising gradually. In that case, what method is best?

If according to the School of Dhyana (Zen) Buddhism, it is to let go. Let go of matters that are of unconcern to you, or your own matters. Let go of all worries, afflictions, attachments and doubts.

If practicing the School of Esoteric Buddhism, recite Mantra for 24 hours uninterrupted. To recite Mantra in full clarity, without mind activation, no rising thought and no attachment.

If practicing the School of Pure Land Buddhism, chanting (mindfulness) Amitabha for 24 hours uninterrupted, chanting the name of Amitabha clearly and hearing the chanting of Amitabha clearly, doing this continuously walking, standing, sitting and lying in every state of your daily life. Chanting while sleeping, the same way as reciting a Mantra.

The School of Dhyana (Zen) Buddhism is about letting go. Even the habit of sleep must be let go; only then can you practice cultivation. There are no other special methods to enlightenment.

心經     卷(二)   法、化、報三身  

(上星期講到: 他不知道這厲害這種「因」。他當年修的「因」,只是想成阿羅漢、想出離三界、想成菩薩,沒有發願成佛;就是發願成佛,用的方式也是無量劫慢慢修。)

真正「念佛成佛」只有一個法門,就是「阿彌陀佛 – 念佛法門」。「念佛是因,成佛是果」,是因果問題,不是他有什麼問題。如果這些高僧大德腦筋轉過來了,真的念佛了,每個都成佛,一生就成佛,三個月就成。

所以如果沒智慧,見不到,絕對見不到。

「智慧」是什麼?知道佛的現象,這叫「智慧」。

一般人心裡都很狹窄,境界都很曲折;既看不破,也放不下。求一個温飽,這不能修行。

為什麼不行?這不是修行,這是「貪」。貪生、怕死在這世界,這世界也是貪生、怕死造出來的。我們的世界 – 「成住壞滅」,現在是住,越住越糟糕,沒多久這世界就要滅了。

我們地球就算壽命一百億年,中間有很多時候不適合住人。恐龍時代能住人?

人類歷史大概一萬多年,那地球一百億年,其他時間在幹什麼? 就跟現在我們看九大行星一樣,荒廢了。

有不同的眾生在上面,我們看不到,有外星眾生、靈界的眾生在修行,像月球上都有。像剛剛跟同修談到,如果今天你有天眼,就看得到有不同的眾生,也有不同的佛菩薩在上面說法渡眾。比較嚴重的汚染還是我們地球,地球的是最嚴重。

為什麼?因為有了物質跟身體的執著,所以造業造的很嚴重。

什麼叫「業」?就是想法、看法、說法、做法。以「貪、瞋、痴、慢、疑」為主,你想清淨都不得清淨。我舉個例:你想要在起心、動念中修,你有沒有辦法跟人家一邊聊天、一邊講話的時候,心是定的?

然後,你知道他講的清清楚楚,說的清清楚楚,有沒有辦法?

應該可以。可是,你還不能有這種現象發生,就是不能「執著」這種感覺,這是初步。

你能不能在家什麼事都不做,從早到晚身心清淨,一塵不染,不動一個念頭,行不行?做不到。

因為沒有覺悟的習慣,沒有修行的習慣,也沒有正知、正見 – 就是知見。「知」是了解,「見」是見解;對於佛法 – 就是覺悟法的這種知識、智慧、能力,你沒有。

「見」就是什麼?是能照。就是穿透物質現象、穿透精神現象,你能了解一切現象。

所以基本上,我看你不如就選一個方式,在起心、動念中把你的煩惱慢慢拿掉。那最好的方法是什麼?

如果照「禪宗」講,就是放下,不關自己的事情放下,自己的事情也放下,把憂慮、煩惱、執著、懷疑都放下。

如果「修密」的,持咒二十四小時不斷,咒,念得清清楚楚,不起心、不動念、不執著。

如果「修淨土」,二十四小時念佛不斷,「佛號」念得清清楚楚,聽得清清楚楚,行住坐臥不斷。睡覺的時候照樣念。念咒照樣念。

禪宗:放下。睡覺的時候,連睡覺都要放下,這才能修行。沒有特殊法門。
