Explanation of the Title: Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 48

(Last week we ended with, “I am saying that this Arhat has experiential entry into the cognitive sphere of Arhatship currently. Presently, there are no common persons who have ceased the affliction of illusions and arising temptation from things seen and thought; there are none in this world. There are many Transformation Bodies of Buddha Bodhisattva who come here but it does not count, because he has already attained Buddha enlightenment. I am referring to a common person through regular cultivation practice to attain Arhatship; there is none. Not to mention the World-honored One—Shakyamuni Buddha—who appeared in our Saha Land, he demonstrated becoming a Buddha in perfection. It is us, all living beings who move Buddha and Bodhisattva to come to the world.“)

 

Especially for Chinese people, life is bitter but China is a land of propriety and righteousness with five thousand years of culture and high wisdom. The only thing is that there is no way to leave the Threefold Worlds (Triloka – the universe is divided into three worlds of karmic rebirth – desire, form and formless). As a result, the Buddha teaching transmits from West India to East China. Great Master-the Sixth Patriarch-Hui-Neng was the last one who brought this to greater heights of development. The Eight Schools of Buddhism (Zen, Tiantai, Huayan, Vajrayana or Esoteric, Consciousness-only, Ritsu, Three Treatise and Pure Land) all developed to a higher stage in China.

The School of Dhyana (Zen) Buddhism uses the Diamond Sutra to confirm the mind is a Buddha mind, the same way as the Pure Land School and the Vajrayana (Esoteric) School. The Diamond Sutra is the Prajnaparamita Sutra.

Therefore, the Buddha trails door to door with his alms bowl, Subhuti praises him to be extraordinary and asks him to give us an example. Every bit of life, take a sip of water, eat cake, but your mind does not have attachment, and without attachments then seeing with crystal clarity. Drinking water, taking a cup of water, there is no phenomenal characteristic of water in the mind, no phenomenal characteristic of the cup. The phenomenal characteristic is an impression, it is not leaving an impression in mind. Remember this trick – just do not leave any impression in mind; this mind is more purified of defiling illusion. This is called not attaching to the “four kinds of misconception”.

The “four attached perspectives to four kinds of misconception” is more in-depth – the attached perspective to the self-I, a person different from other Individuals, different from other living groups, and the limitation on continuing existence. After you also let go of these “four attached perspectives to four kinds of misconception”, then you have eradicated the unenlightened condition. It is the state of:

Eradication of one grade of the unenlightened condition, to confirm one grade of embodiment of the truth (Dharma body).

 In fact, after you let go of the “four kinds of misconception”, you have already eradicated the unenlightened condition. However, after letting go of the “four attached perspectives to four kinds of misconception”, then your attainment status is higher.  Can also say this cognitive sphere has genuinely let go “four kinds of misconception” and “four attached perspectives to four kinds of misconception”, if you are the 8th Stage Bodhisattva (as the 48th of the 52 cultivation tiers) and beyond, you can then see the movements in the Alaya-consciousness.

The movement of Alaya is the 8th consciousness–seeds of impure and pure are harmoniously together in the Tathagatagarbha, the database–a mixed database with good, bad, pure; it is the database of all seeds. Reaching the attainment of the 8th Stage Bodhisattva – the state of realizing intrinsic truth with unmoved mind; one sees the movement in Alaya – the fluctuation phenomena.

We know Guanyin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) when she was in the 2nd Stage Bodhisattva status and had accepted the Great Compassion Mantra transmitted from the Buddha of the Great in Thousand Light of Peace Abiding Tathagata. Once she chants the Great Compassion Mantra, she instantly transcended from the 2nd Stage to the 8th Stage (48th of 52 cultivation tiers).

The Great Compassion Mantra is the attained cognitive sphere of all Buddha of 99 billion grains of sand in the Ganges River. This number of all Buddha of 99 billion grains of sand in the Ganges River is exceptional. When we bear in mind the Great Compassion Mantra and can complete the chanting the Great Compassion Mantra in one thought, one thought is one split second; then you have an opportunity to eradicate “four kinds of misconception” and “four attached perspectives to four kinds of misconception”; because your mind has the imperturbable stillness of mind control and is unmoved by any phenomena.

Any mantra can function effectively after eradicating the “four kinds of misconception” and “four attached perspectives to four kinds of misconception”. A mantra is vibration and the wave motion of the attained cognitive sphere of all Buddha and Bodhisattva. This kind of wave motion is different from the average person’s “greed (attachment), aversion, ignorance, arrogance and suspicion”; it is the phenomena of a purified body and mind. The Great Compassion Mantra is the delicate mind-seal of Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) as the mind is the Buddha-mind in all, therefore it is effective.

(上星期講到: 我講這阿羅漢是現證。現在凡夫修行 – 斷「見思煩惱」,沒有了,這世界沒有了。來的有佛菩薩化身,那是「化身」不能算,他已經成就。我講是凡夫這麼修成阿羅漢,沒有。更何況世尊釋迦牟尼佛當年到我們娑婆世界來示現,他示現圓滿成佛,是我們眾生感得佛菩薩到世間來。)

 

尤其中國人,中國人雖然生活苦,中國五千年文化禮義之邦,智慧很高,唯一就是沒有辦法出離三界。所以佛法會東傳,傳到震旦 – 就是中國。最後是六祖大師把它發揚光大,八宗,都在我們中國發揚光大。

禪宗以《金剛經》印心,淨土宗也是以《金剛經》,密教也是以《金剛經》。《金剛經》是《般若經》。

所以佛沿門托缽,須菩提讚歎他希有,就是給我們做榜樣。在日常生活中點點滴滴,喝一口水,吃一個蛋糕,你心都無住,沒有執著,看的清清楚楚。喝水 – 拿個杯子喝水,心裡沒有水的「相」,沒有杯子的「相」;「相」是印象;不落印象。記住這個竅門 – 就是不落任何印象,這心多清淨。這叫不著「四相」。

「四見」那就更深入 – 「我見、人見、眾生見、壽者見」,四見也放下,那你就「破無明」。 「破一品無明,證一分法身」。其實四相也就「破無明」了,「四見」的品位是更高。也可以這樣講這境界是真正放下「四相」、「四見」:如果是「八地」以上菩薩就看到「阿賴耶識」的動相。

「阿賴耶」的動相 – 就是我們「第八識」 – 「如來藏識」裡面染淨種子和合在一起,就是資料庫 – 善、惡、淨這種渾雜一起的資料庫,就是「種子」資料庫。到「八地」,就看到這裡面的動相 – 波動現象。

我們知道觀音菩薩在「二地」的時候,接受佛菩薩給他的《大悲咒》 – 千光王靜住如來傳給他的《大悲咒》,他一念《大悲咒》就超到第「八地」。

《大悲咒》是九十九億恆河沙諸佛所證的境界,九十九億恆河沙數諸佛,這還了得。我們持《大悲咒》能夠一念當中把《大悲咒》念完,一個念頭,一個剎那,這就有機會破「四相」、「四見」了,心定。

任何咒語,如果破了「四相」、「四見」就起作用了。「咒語」,咒就是振動,語是諸佛菩薩所證境界的波動。這個波動不是我們一般人講「貪、瞋、痴、慢、疑」,不是;是身心清淨的現象。《大悲咒》是觀音菩薩的微妙心印,所以有效。
