Explanation of the Title: Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 73

(Last week we ended with, “”Staying” means unmoved, and “crystal-clear perception” is its virtuous function which is the light. When we speak of Prajna, Prajna is the virtuous function of Buddha-nature, it penetrates all afflictions thoroughly.”)

 

Striving in motion after attaining the state of “one-pointed concentration without scattering”, then will you advance to the next level of “one mind undisturbed in enlightenment” which is the cognitive sphere of the “eradication of one grade of the unenlightened condition, to realize one grade of embodiment of the truth (Dharma Body)”. It is called Shattering the existence of open space (all doubt), who has awakened to the truth. So, the existence of open space (all doubt) is shattered.

As said before, the blue sky turns out to be an illusory image, and by knowing it is an illusory image then you practice cultivation. Knowing to let go of affliction, attachments and the erroneous thinking, and after letting go and then to strive in motion your affliction of illusion and temptation arise from things seen and thought is cut off, and the affliction of illusion and temptation through the immense variety of duties helping all living being has also been eradicated. Then your sphere is shattering the existence of open space (all doubt).

Speaking about Zen Buddhism, the last sphere is:

To cultivate above the head (sphere) of Vairocana Buddha.

Vairocana, the luminous one (the light of the sun, the great sun Buddha) of everywhere, is the self-nature’s tranquility and beyond all becoming and conditionality Dharma Body. To let go of the self-nature’s tranquility and beyond all becoming and conditionality, this kind of phenomena is called the eradication of the unenlightened condition. In Esoteric Buddhism, this is named as Adidharma, the highest level. Here it symbolizes: When you have verified with experience into the cognitive sphere of Vairocana, there exists no image of Vairocana and one also lets go of the discrimination in both “all phenomena presented and revealed in mind” and “the attached notions to all phenomena presented and revealed in mind ”.

Basically, shattering the existence of open space (all doubt) is precisely using the “eradication of the unenlightened condition” to represent. Basically, it describes eradicating one grade; however, some with excellent natural capacity can eradicate up to 12 grades. If one has Guan-Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara) skill they would surpass from the 2nd Stage Bodhisattva status directly up to the 8th Stage Bodhisattva status. This is beyond the extent of this discussion.

Guan-Yin Bodhisattva memorized the Great Compassion Mantra from the ancient Buddha as soon as the Mantra entered her organ of hearing. She escalated from the 2nd Stage Bodhisattva directly to the 8th Stage Bodhisattva position which is remarkable. The Great Compassion Mantra explained “the exquisite mental impression – the mind is the Buddha-mind in all” of 9.9 billion Buddha and Bodhisattva, is different from the Mantra talks during the causation stage of practice cultivation in general. This is experiential entry into the Buddha-truth moment of being utmost purified of defiling illusion in the mind within the Buddha or Bodhisattva, by means of the inconceivable phenomena as the representation.

One can chant the Great Compassion Mantra genuinely, and completely already in an instant. The sphere to complete in an instant is a metaphor of the state of “one mind undisturbed in enlightenment”. When chanting (mindfulness) Amitabha to the state of “one mind undisturbed in enlightenment” precisely equals the state of instantly memorizing the Great Compassion Mantra. If you let go of all thoroughly, this phrase of Amitabha’s name immediately becomes Buddha in perfection. “Immediately” does not mean after couple days, it means in that moment.

When the skill is used proficiently “the chanting (mindfulness) there is no attachment, discriminations, and without thought arising in the mind but one constantly does the chanting (mindfulness)”. “Chanting”, there is the existence of phenomenal characteristics; “without thought arising in the mind” is not attaching to the existence of phenomenal characteristics, as nothingness. It is the oneness of “nothingness” and “the existence of phenomenal characteristics”. Therefore, it is said “the chanting (mindfulness) there is no attachment, discriminations; without thought arising in the mind one constantly does the chanting (mindfulness)”.

Since this is the case, the minimum attainment of chanting (mindfulness) Amitabha is “one mind undisturbed in enlightenment” which attains the 7th Stage Bodhisattva (the 47th of the 52 cultivation tiers) and beyond. Why? It is the level of non-retrogression. If you have good natural capacity, one can attain the Universal Enlightenment (Samyak-Sambodhi) status which is the 11th Stage Bodhisattva (as one grade less to become Buddha)

Why does one become non-retrogression? It has to do with the 48 vows of Amitabha’s assistance. In the 48 vows of Amitabha: 

All beings go to the Pure Land, all attain as Avaivartika.

Avaivartika, a Sanskrit term which means being unmoved, non-retrogression. You do not recede from the position attained above the 7th Stage Bodhisattva level. Strictly speaking, the 11th Stage Bodhisattva level – attainment of Absolute Universal Enlightenment (Samyak-Sambodhi) to become a Buddha. After becoming Buddha, one will attain a sphere which is: Perfectly integrated in the ocean of wisdom is truly being the master of one’s self.

Therefore, these four-line verses bring together a topic from a certain point of view. Speaking separately has its separate sphere and brings them together to see and it has sphere of unison – as a combined form of points to numerous affinities in harmony to complete one object.

Shattering the existence of open space (all doubt), since you have already eradicated one grade of the unenlightened condition, to realize one grade of embodiment of the truth (Dharma body), then what do you do each day? Speaking here is using the 1st of the ten stages Bodhisattva of the Perfect Teaching School, same as the 1st grade of ten Bodhisattva stages of the Distinctive Teaching School as a model example. One can reproduce oneself infinitely and go everywhere by manifesting the “eight stages of the Buddha life”, this is extraordinary.

It is fine if you have problems understanding this. My explanation today is relatively deep. Even if you do not understand, the “seed of the Bodhi (enlightenment leading to nirvana)” is being planted eternally. In the future, once germination occurs you will naturally benefit from it. Listening to the scripture, listen attentively, do not mind if you do not understand it. Whether understand it or not that is not using your mind, thought and perception (discernment), it uses your purified mind of defiling illusion and naturally understands.

Therefore, Bodhisattva of the first Stage can manifest oneself in the Milky Way galaxy – ten billion Milky Way galaxies which forms one world unit; one can manifest the “eight stages of the Buddha’s life” in 100 of ten billion Milky Way galaxies. The “eight stages” are eight phenomena which talks about how Shakyamuni Buddha came to our world to take material shape, and also to manifest the “eight stage of a Buddha’s life”.  Shakyamuni, who was a Buddha ages ago, came to our Earth to take material shape 3,000 years ago which was his 8,000th time. He already eradicated all 41 grades of the unenlightened condition and perfectly attained Buddhahood. He manifested 3,000 years ago and he had the connection with all beings of our Earth. Even though his body had already undergone illusory transformation, however, the Buddha teaching is preserved in the world.

(五 )     慧海圓融

(上星期講到: 「住」是不動,那個見是「住的德用」,就是光。我們講「般若」,「般若」是佛性的德用,照透一切煩惱是「般若」。)

「事一心」再加功運行,到「理一心不亂」。「理一心」是「破一品無明,證一分法身」的境界,就叫作「粉碎虛空誰入禪」。虛空就被粉碎了。

前面講的「青天是幻影」,曉得是幻影了;修行。知道放下煩惱、放下執著、放下妄想。放下後加功運行,「見思煩惱」斷了,「塵沙、無明」破了,「粉碎虛空」。

我們講禪宗,最後「毘盧遮那頂上行」。毘盧遮那,是遍照一切,自性清淨無為法身。在這上面放下自性清淨無為,這種現象叫「破無明」。那密教講叫「阿爾達瑪」,最高層次了。我們這個講象徵。你實證到毘盧遮那的境界時,沒有毘盧遮那的相;「相分」、「見分」都放下。

基本上「粉碎虛空」就是以「破無明」為代表。基本講破一品,根性夠的破十二品。如果像觀音菩薩功夫,「二地」直超「八地」,就不在範圍之內,不在話下。

觀音菩薩從古佛受持《大悲咒》,一入耳根,從「二地」超到「八地」,不得了的。《大悲咒》是九十九億諸佛菩薩所說的「微妙心印」,不是一般在因中修行所講的咒語。這是佛菩薩內心的清淨到極致的時候證入,以不可思議的現象為代表。

真正會念《大悲咒》,一剎那就完成。一剎那完成這境界,我們拿來比喻「理一心不亂」。念佛念到「理一心不亂」時,就等於一剎那受持《大悲咒》。如果你放下徹底,這一句佛號當下圓滿成佛。當下不是說過兩天,是現在。

功夫用到純熟的時候,念而無念,無念而念。「念」,有相;「無念」,不執著相,無相。無相即是有相,有相即是無相。所以說「念而無念,無念而念」。

既然如此,念佛最低限度「理一心不亂」是「七地」以上。為什麼?不退。如果你根器很好,就到等覺第十一地。

為什麼會變成不退轉?以《彌陀四十八願》加持的關係,《阿彌陀佛四十八願》裡面不是講:「所有一切眾生到極樂世界去,全部是阿惟越致。」「阿惟越致」是梵語,就是不動的意思,不退的意思。不退不動,通途來講是「七地」以上。嚴格來說十一地,就是等覺成佛了。成佛以後,就得一個境界,就是「慧海圓融真自在」。

所以這四句要合起來看。分開講有分開講的境界,合起來看有合起來看的境界 – 「一合相」。

「粉碎虛空」,既然破一品無明,證一分法身了,那每天做什麼事? 現在就講以「圓教初住」、「別教初地」來做個示範,他可以「百界分身」、「八相成道」,這個厲害。

今天講的比較深入,聽不懂沒關係,聽不懂,一歷耳根、永為道種,以後發芽時自有受用。聽經專心聽,不要去管它懂不懂,懂不懂不是用你的心意識去懂,是你心清淨,自然就懂。

所以「初地」菩薩他們可以在銀河系,一百億個銀河系之中,它是一個單位世界,可以有一百個一百億個銀河系,示現「八相成道」。八相就是八種相,這是講佛陀來我們世間示現,也示現「八相成道」,講佛陀 – 釋迦牟尼佛。釋迦牟尼佛當然久遠劫前早就成佛,他來地球示現,三千年前是第八千次。久遠劫前他已經破盡四十一品無明,圓證佛果,跟我們世界的眾生、跟我們地球眾生有緣,三千年前來示現。現在雖然身體幻化了,但是佛法留在世間。
