Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 49

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with: Why do we have “three minds and two consciousness”? Because we want to discriminate; we want to have attachment.)

[Sutra] No existence of the realms of the eyes, up to and including no existence of the realms of consciousness. No existence of the unenlightened condition, also no ending of the unenlightened conditions; up to and including no aging and death, also no ending of aging and death. There is no suffering, no cause of suffering, no cessation the suffering, and no way to nirvana. There is no wisdom, and nothing can be lay hold of.                                                                            

[經文]無眼界。乃至無意識界。無無明亦無無明盡。乃至無老死。亦無老死盡。無苦集滅道。無智。亦無得。

This Sutra is becoming more and more brilliant. No existence of the realms of the eyes up to and including no existence of the realms of consciousness; the variation within is huge. This is what we have just talked about a moment ago as eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind; sights, sounds, scent-smells, tastes, touch, and all illusory phenomena; even this does not exist, even this kind of sensory organ’s function also does not exist. Since ancient times, there were many people who misunderstood the Heart Sutra; they think that in the end nothing exists, then what meaning does life have?

They are all mistaken; the Sutra talks about how everything “all there” is everything “not there”. Previously stated: Hence, within no phenomena as the impermanent existence nature there is no materialistic phenomena, no feelings, thinking, mental formations, and consciousness; if you have not yet comprehended this, then the following discussion will be even harder to comprehend.

If we move further back to initiate his omniscient penetrative ability with crystal clear perception that all nature of Five Skandhas (the five composition elements of our existence) are the absence of inherent existence. If you have not understood omniscient penetrative ability with crystal clear perception, then you will not understand the following explanation.

Let us move further back to have perfect insight of being master of oneself Bodhisattva; this to have perfect insight is extremely important. Whatever the insight of your mind, it manifests the sphere of your outside world. Someone could go to the coffin store and see the Bliss World of Amitabha Pure Land; someone could go to a funeral home and see the “purified of defiling illusion, equality and enlightenment”.

How come? One has purified mind of defiling illusion.

An old friend of mine practiced cultivation by volunteering to help the families of the dead at a funeral home to stay awake to chant and pray. With only a five-watt light, all around him were coffins filled with dead people; several people went there, some would be restless either sitting or standing for the whole night.

How come? They would hear sounds that were not supposed to be heard and would see things which are not supposed to be seen.

Some were only there for five or six minutes and felt the atmosphere was not right and then they run out. All those people had not comprehended all the universe phenomena have the impermanent existence nature characteristics. Then, there was one who sat there with a crystal-clear mind, unsoiled by impure practices.

Why? His body and mind were being the master of himself.

He did not place any of it in his mind. His mind was completely unmoved by any phenomena.

You asked him: why was he unmoved by any phenomena?

He answered: “So simple; all are phenomena.

What is the difference between a dead person and a living person?

What is the difference between the coffin and the wood floor?

Today one place is filled with living people, that other place is filled with dead people, what is the difference?

These are his concepts.

Moving a step further, one has even let go the concept of life or death; and completely without this concept. Moving another step further, there is no concept and all the phenomena he sees, nothing exists. Today, regardless of any method to enlightenment, if you cannot see clearly the life of the universe, it is very hard to do cultivation practice. Especially your habit; only you understand yourself the most.

Do you think he can control it? If he can change to another concept, then he can control.

Therefore, I feel that in many conditions, other people cannot help you. Others can only provide a method, just like how Buddha Bodhisattva explains Sutra, and he tells you the truth about the universe and passes on the method of enlightenment to you.  Whether you understand it or do it exactly, that all depends on yourself.

How to do it?  Each of you if you are interested in this, remind yourself during the exercise of morning and evening (Buddhist practice).

Why recite Sutra in the morning? In the morning when one gets up, there are not too many thoughts in one’s head, and it has an uplifting influence, especially the Heart Sutra: All materialistic phenomena are not different from no phenomenon as the impermanent existence nature;  the fundamental essence of no phenomenon is not different from all materialistic phenomena. You only need to learn a few words among the Sutra by heart which is sufficient.

〔經文〕「無眼界乃至無意識界,無無明,亦無無明盡,無老死乃至無老死盡,無苦集滅道,無智亦無得。」

這後面越來越精彩。「無眼界乃至無意識界」,這中間變化可大。這就是剛剛講的「眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意」,「色、聲、香、味、觸、法」,連這個種感官的作用也沒有。所以古來很多人誤會《心經》,講到最後什麼都沒有,那我們人生有什麼意思。

他搞錯了,它講什麼都「有」是什麼都「沒有」。所以你要是前面是「故空中無色,無受、想、行、識」這個東西,你要是沒有弄懂,下面就很難。

如果我們再往上提,提到「照見五蘊皆空」,「照見」兩個字不懂,你下面也不懂。

那你「照見」再往上看,「觀」字,「觀自在菩薩」,這個「」字極其重要。你的內心怎麼觀,你外面現什麼境界。有人到棺材店看到的是極樂世界。有人到殯儀館看到的是清淨、平等、覺悟。

為什麼?他心清淨。

我記得我以前有個朋友,他們修行自動到穦殯儀館去幫人家守夜。守夜五燭火的燈光很小的燈泡。旁邊都是棺材,都是死的人。好幾個人去,有的人是一個晚上坐立不安。

為什麼?他聽到不該聽到的聲音,他看到不該看到的東西。

有的人,呆個一、二分鐘,五、六分鐘,那個氣氛不對跑掉了。這些人都是不瞭解「諸法空相」。

那有的人坐在那裡清清楚楚,兩袖清風。

為什麼?身心自在。

他對這些東西完全沒擺在心裡,心是完全不動的。

你問他為什麼可以不動?很簡單,一切都是現象。

這死人,活人有什麼兩樣?

今天一個地方裝活人,那個地方裝死人,有什麼兩樣?

那他的觀念是這樣。

那更高一層那很簡單,死活一切他都放下,都沒這個觀念。再進一步,觀念也沒有,見到所有一切相也沒有。今天無論任何法門,那你對於宇宙人生如果不能夠看清楚,不容易修行。尤其是自己的習氣,自己最清楚。

你說他不能控制嗎?他要換一個觀念,他就可以控制。

所以我是覺得有很多的狀態,別人幫不了你,別人只能提供一個方法,就像佛菩薩講經,他把宇宙的真相告訴你,把覺悟的方法傳授給你。你聽不聽得懂,能不能做到,要靠你自己。

怎麼做法?各位如果有興趣,我們早晚課可以提醒自己。

早上為什麼要念一卷經?早上起來,念頭不是很多,熏陶一遍。尤其是《心經》:「色不異空,空不異色」,只要你記住其中兩句也就夠了。
