Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 50

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with, “You only need to learn a few words among the Sutra by heart which is sufficient.”)

All materialistic phenomena are not different from no phenomenon as the impermanent existence nature; the fundamental essence of no phenomenon is not different from all materialistic phenomena. You get up in the morning to remind yourself there is no need to be overly attached to all phenomena, overly fussed about everything, then your mind will see boundless open vistas. You go to work and regard your boss, colleagues or co-workers whether they are either levels above you, the same level or levels below, or even your old enemies or creditors; you will see all in clarity. During the entire day, you practice being disillusioned with all and letting go. You need to practice this the extent of your living. In the evening after work when you go home, you are very tired and take a shower, and have a meal. I advise each of you to watch less television.

Why? You have enough afflictions; there is no need to watch again.

Some people say watching TV helps them to relax. Speaking truthfully, it is not relaxing; it is taking you to another place to have delusional thought. You think it is relaxing.

After you shower, what should you do? Very simply, you should compose your mind. Do not think about anything and meditate for five minutes. After five minutes, you can either recite the Sutra, or practice chanting Amitabha.

Why recite or chant? Your imperturbable stillness of mind control is not strong enough, after five minutes you will want to watch TV again, or you will want to do other projects or plan. Then we need to use 10 more minutes to still our mind control.

How to have stillness of mind control? Recite Sutra.

For the beginner, one needs to recite Sutra. Sutra recitation can stabilize your mind. When reciting Sutra, there is no need to care much for its meaning. People nowadays seem to want to understand the Sutra first before they will recite it. Frankly speaking, it is impossible to understand it thoroughly; while your mind has not been purified of defiling illusion, there is no way to comprehend this kind of completely pure condition.

Just like a moment ago when we talked about the Heart Sutra, if your mind has not been purified of defiling illusion, you will be unable to enter its condition; and you have only heard the surface meaning of my explaining words, everything seems to mean what it means, but it does not. Every day, during morning and evening exercises, remind yourself at least once for three to five years; this is called fundamental learning.

To learn what? To learn a way of thinking, a way to look at things and an attitude towards your life. Doing this all positively and proactively.

After you take hold of life and see it clearly then you and your co-workers will never be in disharmony. You and others will not generate conflict because of different concepts, you will not just merely accept them, you will not have any afflictions from it. This is called applying Buddha Dharma (teaching) while living.

How about treating yourself? Your body and mind feel delighted. As you perfect your skill, you will know where you will go in the future and will be completely clear about all. Our body is just like clothing; you can take it off at any time.

Someone might say: “I cannot do this. I am too serious about “birth, aging, sickness and death”. It is impossible for me to do this.”

Then one makes life difficult for oneself. Our body is like clothing that needs to be maintained and taken care of, but you shall not have any attachment to it. When you possess it, it becomes trouble! If you make use of it, then it is very simple. Therefore, a smart person keeps usage rights and does not want ownership rights. To a person of wisdom, usage and ownership are the same, and they have let go of both usage and ownership; one makes use of it as usual but without the thought of using. Moving one step further, one does not have the concept of usage and ownership, one is completely without any thought, and one has even let go of usage.

Why is one not using? Their way is known as effortlessly achieving the way of enlightenment leading to nirvana.

Now when talking about reality, we use the condition of the Heart Sutra. For instance, when other people scold you, you do not hear it. It is not that your ears have a problem, your mind was fundamentally not focused on that. If people say you are good, you do not feel happy; if people say you are bad, you will also not be angry.

Why? It is because all phenomena are: all materialistic phenomena are not different from no phenomenon as the impermanent existence nature; the fundamental essence of no phenomenon is not different from all materialistic phenomena.

Everyone, have you all not thought this through clearly now?

It is like driving a car and knowing all the traffic signs and all the left turns or right turns are clear. For instance, if you are driving a car to a new place, your mind uses the method of non-increase and non-decrease, non-impure and non-pure. You are crystal clear after having clarity regarding the map, and you begin driving and there is no need to have any doubts. Your driving time is relaxed and pleasant, not helter-skelter. It is your moodiness being removed and using your wisdom and using your rational mind to start.

色即是空,空即是色」,早上起來提醒自己,對一切現象不要太執著,太計較,海闊天空。你去上班,對於老闆同事,中間下面也好,對於冤家債主也好,你看得清清楚楚。你這一天就在實行看破放下,要把這個帶到生活範圍。晚上下班回來,很累,洗個澡,吃個飯,我勸各位電視還是少看。

我們講的實際一點,為什麼電視少看?夠煩惱,不須要再看。

有的人說看電視放鬆,說真話,它不是放鬆,它叫你到另外一個地方去打妄想。所以你以為是放鬆。

那你洗完澡後做什麼?很簡單把心定下來,什麼都不要想,定下來個五分鐘。五分鐘以後,念經也好,念佛也好。

為什麼要念?你的那個定力不夠。

五分鐘以後又想要看電視,五分鐘以後你又要做一些什麼計劃。我們再用個十分鐘,把心再定一定。

怎麼定?念經。

初下手的人要念經,念經把你的心穩定下來。念的時候不要管那個經裡面的意思,現在的人好像要把經搞懂了我才念。老實說,弄不懂,你的心不清淨,沒有辦法懂這種完全清淨的狀態。

就像我們剛剛講【心經】,你的心不清淨,你無法進入,你只是聽到我言說的表面,好像是這個意思;但它不是的。那你早晚各提醒一遍,三年到五年這叫很基本的學習。

學習什麼?學習你對人生的一種想法看法和態度。這一切是積極的。

你把人生看清楚了,那同事之間跟你沒有摩擦,你跟家人之間不會因為任何不同的觀念而產生摩擦,你不僅接受而且也不生煩惱,這我們是把所謂佛法用在生活。

那你對你自己呢?身心愉快,功力深的時候,你自己知到將來到那裡去。你完全清楚,我們身體就像衣服一樣,隨時可以脫掉的。

有人說,不行。我這個「生老病死」太嚴重,我這個不可能的。

那你跟自己過不去。我們這個身體就像衣服,衣服要保養它,愛惜它,但你不要執著它。你擁有很麻煩,你使用它就很簡單。所以聰明人有使用權,不要擁有。有智慧的人,使用和擁有是一模一樣,使用和擁有皆放下,但他照樣使用,卻沒有使用的心。更上一層樓,使用和擁有的概念都沒有,完全沒有念頭,他也不用了。

他為什麼不用?他叫無功用道。

現在我們講到現實上,我們就把【心經】剛剛講的狀態拿出來用,在這裡活生生用一遍。譬如:人家罵你,你連聽都沒聽到。不是你耳朵有問題,是你的心根本就沒有在那個上面。他說你好,你也不會高興。他說你壞,你也不會動怒。

為什麼?所有一切現象都是「色不異空,空不異色」。

這樣大家有沒有想想清楚?

你開車,交通號誌都知道,左轉右轉一切清楚。譬如說:你開車到一個新地方,你的心就用這個方法,不增不減,不垢不淨。你清清楚楚明明白白,地圖看好了就進去了,不要懷疑。開車的時候,輕鬆愉快,也不會慌慌張張。就是把你的情緒拿掉,用你的智慧,用你的理智來下手。
