Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 68

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with, “Apart from this, one thinks only for oneself, then this kind of person is not only self-afflicted, but also brings chaos to others. This is a big problem.”)

Bodhisattva who have eradicated the unenlightened condition stay in a daily sphere of no phenomenon all in all.

No phenomenon all in all is a state of freedom and being the master of oneself, like the state of practicing to the profound Prajna Paramita. One initiates omniscient penetrative ability and sees the nature of all Five Skandhas (the five composition elements of our existence) are the absence of the inherent existence. So releasing oneself from all the obstruction caused by suffering and misfortune.

One then has omniscient penetrative ability, therefore the function of no phenomenon all in all is to have omniscient penetrative ability. The intrinsic quality of no phenomenon all in all is the Realm of Eternal Peace and Tranquil Light and is called the “Realization of non-birth and non-extinction of all phenomena”.

The state of non-birth and non-extinction precisely has no phenomena of “birth, aging, sickness and death”; it even does not have thought movement and being unable to produce any thought is the literal meaning. It expresses that under all phenomena one is completely and utterly still and unmoved. This state is difficult for us to experience.

Regarding this “still and unmoved”, “still” means no phenomenon and quiet. Stillness becomes omniscient penetrative ability, and one’s mind is settled as still water. The function of a mind settled as still water is like a mirror; it reflects everything in clarity and without difference. For instance, if your mind is a mirror, you reflect the person you like and reflect the person you dislike. A mirror does not have any reactions, it will not reflect one and not the other one. The mirror itself has no wave motions and is quiet. After it reflects, it does not activate its mind and has no arising thought.

Therefore, with regards to no phenomenon all in all, no phenomenon needs to be interpreted as “quiet and unmoved”. The majority of Bodhisattva that have attained this state of “quiet and unmoved” are all above the 10th stage (as beyond the 50th level of the 52 cultivation tiers), called the “Realization of Eternal Peace of nirvana”. This level is higher than the “Realization of non-birth and non-extinction of all phenomena”. The “medium class” of the Realization of Eternal Peace of Nirvana is the status of Absolute Universal Enlightenment Bodhisattva (the 51st level of the 52 cultivation tiers). The “superior class” of the Realization of Eternal Peace of Nirvana is the attainment of Tathagata (Buddha).

Who constantly roams in the state of no phenomenon all in all is the sphere of the mind without wave motions eternally.

To reimburse debts of the numerous existence of world-periods: since one’s mind is unmoved, how come he still has the debts of the numerous existence of world-periods?

The existence of world-period, we talk about time – as past, present, and future, and all represented by the existence of world-periods. We constantly say that:

The chanting of one name of Amitabha can disperse the serious crimes of life or death for 80 by 100 million existence of world-periods.            

All of you chant Amitabha, do you have this kind of experience until now?

With chanting the name Amitabha, not only has it eliminated present faults, but it has also eliminated the future and the past. If you chant 10 times, then 800 million existences of world-periods of faults are eliminated entirely. Thus, there are people who say: chanting Amitabha for a whole day and whole night, does one not become a Buddha then?

All delusional thought and attachment have gone. This name of Amitabha has such formidable power. This is only a metaphor. In fact, chanting Amitabha can eliminate faults for infinite 100 million existence of world-periods.

How does it eliminate? It is very simple, since the infinite and boundless existence of world-periods of our life are precisely delusional thought and attachment. If this Amitabha can let you attain the state of purified of defiling illusion and without defilements, precisely the moment without wave motion of a thought, then your karmic obstruction of infinite and boundless will all be eliminated, the delusional thought and attachment will also be removed. When a thought becomes purified of defiling illusion, time and space also do not exist; the phenomena of “birth, aging, sickness and death” are also gone.

For one who knows how to chant correctly or incorrectly, the difference can be wide. A person who knows how to chant Amitabha correctly is who constantly roams in the state of no phenomenon all in all. A person who does not know how to chant Amitabha correctly is to reimburse debts of the numerous existence of world-periods.

破無明的菩薩,他們每一天都在「畢竟空」的境界。「畢竟空」就是自由自在,「行深般若波羅密多」這個境界。他「照見五蘊皆空,度一切苦厄」。

他是「照見」,所以「畢竟空」的作用叫「照見」。「畢竟空」的本質是「常寂光土」,叫「無生法忍」。

這個「無生」再解釋一下,「無生」就是沒有「生老病死」,甚至於連念頭的波動也沒有,生不出來了,這是字面上的意思。表示說,他一切現象完全畢竟寂然不動,這一點我們很難體驗。

這個「寂然不動」,「寂」是空寂,寂成照,心如止水。心如止水的作用就如鏡子,照什麼都清清楚楚,並且沒有差別。

譬如說:你的心是鏡子,你看到你喜歡的人,你也照,不喜歡的人,你也照,鏡子沒有反應的。鏡子不會說我要照這人,我不要照那個人。鏡子本身沒有波動,寂然的。它照了以後,不起心,不動念。

所以「畢竟空」,這個「空」字,我們不能解釋為空有的空,要解釋成「寂然不動」。這個寂然不動的境界,大部份都是十地菩薩以上,叫「寂滅忍」,這個比「無生法忍」還要高。

「寂滅忍」的中品是等覺菩薩,寂滅忍的上品是如來果地。「常遊畢竟空」,就是永遠都在心不波動的境界。

「為償多劫債」,他即然都心不動,他怎麼還有多劫債?

「劫」,我們講時間,時光,過去,現在,未來,都以「劫」來代表。我們常說念一聲阿彌陀佛可消八十億劫的生死重罪。各位念佛,念到現在有沒有這種體驗?

你念一聲佛號,不僅把現在的罪消掉,未來的也消,過去的也消。那如果念十句,八百億劫的罪全部都消滅。於是有人講,念一天一夜的佛號,不就成佛了嗎?

所有一切的妄想執著,沒有了。這句佛號有這麼大的威力,這個還是個比喻。實際上一句佛號能消無量億劫。

這個怎麼消?很簡單,無量無邊劫來,我們的生活就是妄想執著。你,如果這個佛號,能讓你達到清淨沒有污染,就是一個念頭沒有波動的時候,你那無量無邊的業障都消了,妄想執著也消了。一念清淨的時候,時間和空間也沒有了,生老病死也沒有了。

那會念和不會念是差很多的。會念的人是「常遊畢竟空」。不會念的人是「為償多劫債」。
