Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 75

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with, “Therefore, the absolute universal enlightenment Bodhisattvas (samyak-sambodhi) want to keep the last grade of unenlightened condition (the fundamental worry or the first thought activation of unenlightened and confusion) to enter the dream of all living beings to help them. This is the display of an unconditioned compassionate and merciful mind; it is ultimately to have unconditioned compassion for all the same nature.”)

Therefore, Speaking of Mantra: the background of the Great Compassion Mantra is by means of unconditional mercy to the one without natural affinity, to have unconditioned compassion for all the same nature to construct.

The Buddha name of Amitabha is also a Mantra of Great Inconceivableness, a Great Bright Mantra. Amitabha does not only represent compassion, but also the condition of entering Nirvana thoroughly of all Buddha. Compassion is just one function of our Buddha-nature. Amitabha is the original name of the purified mind in its natural state of the entire universe; he is the merit and virtue function of all Buddha. This is where the difference is.

People often ask: What is the difference between the Great Compassion Mantra and Amitabha? Truthfully speaking, it all manifests from Buddha-nature and there is no difference; they function differently, that is all. Their superficial function when chanted will both move Buddha to respond; all are equal. A person chanting the Great Compassion Mantra can also become Buddha. However, chanting Amitabha is different; Amitabha has his vow power. When you chant the name of Amitabha, it can help you go and be born to the Bliss World of Amitabha Pure Land. Of course, this also requires that you have your own vow power and want to be Amitabha Pure Land.

After you are clear about this phenomenon and principle, you can chant the Great Compassion Mantra to dedicate all merits of the Mantra to the Bliss World of Amitabha Pure Land and make the vow to go to the Bliss World of Amitabha Pure Land. Is this doable? Of course, you can.

However, Amitabha represents the ultimate perfection.

The biggest purpose of explaining the Heart Sutra today is:

What is your mind attitude when chanting Amitabha?

What is your mind attitude when treating people and handling affairs?

If your way of treating people and handling affairs is with no hindrance in your mind, then chanting Amitabha can keep one away from inverted views and delusions, enters Nirvana thoroughly, one does not panic or fear, then this moment you are in the Bliss World of Amitabha Pure Land.

Buddha teaching is for you to put into practice. Buddha teaching is certainly not an academic degree and it is not a subject of knowledge.

Where do you put it into practice? You practice it with every move of your daily life.

Next, I am talking about a Great Bright Mantra, a Supreme Mantra, an Unequalled Mantra.

 A Great Bright Mantra means great brightness, and bright energy. This brightness spans the existence of space, the realm of phenomena, and the entire universe is within this bright energy; this is precisely our Buddha-nature.

A Supreme Mantra just mentioned a moment ago is the “supreme perfect enlightenment”. A Supreme Mantra is the energy field to become Buddha, and to attain Buddha in full perfection.

An Unequalled Mantra means there is none like it which is equal to being unexcelled, the all in all perfection.

It can relieve all sufferings. It is true and cannot be falsified. Earlier we talked about how the moment of practicing the profound Prajna Paramita, can relieve all sufferings.

Every one of you, take a moment to think about how to relieve all sufferings?

The entire Heart Sutra talks about the concept of nothing can lay hold of. You must know, you have not lost, and you also have not gained. Your mind is in peace, you are known as Buddha Bodhisattva and as “the tranquil moon”. Therefore, nothing can lay hold of is our goal of cultivation practice.

How to be in the state of nothing can lay hold of?  Do not even think, just let go of everything.

Therefore, later it speaks: It is true and cannot be falsified. True refers to the “true nature realm of the one reality”- which is not false, it is crystal clear.

Cannot be falsified refers to it not as a meaningless argument.

It is true and cannot be falsified means that your Buddha-nature will not disappear even through infinite and boundless existence of world-periods. The instant you become enlightened, you will see your condition of infinite and boundless existence world-periods; it turns out to be a dream, and unreal.  In the end, you will see that the eradication of the unenlightened conditionis true and cannot be falsified.When you truly are the state of nothing can be lay hold of, you then eradicate your unenlightened condition.

所以我講「」,大悲咒它的背景是以無緣大慈,同體大悲而建的。這句阿彌陀佛佛號,也是「大神咒,大明咒」。阿彌陀佛,他不僅代表所有一切諸佛的「究竟涅槃」的狀態;慈悲不過是佛性當中的一種作用,阿彌陀佛是「法界藏身」,是所有一切諸佛全體的功德作用,就這個不一樣。

有人常問大悲咒和阿彌陀佛有什麼不同?說老實話,都是佛性,沒什麼不同,作用上不同而已。表面的作用,念了都有感應,都是平等的。念大悲咒也可以成佛。可是念阿彌陀佛不同,阿彌陀佛有願力,你念阿彌陀佛名號可以幫助你往生到極樂世界。當然也要你自己有願力,也要到極樂世界。

基本上,這個事理你搞清楚以後,其實可以念「大悲咒」廻向極樂世界,發願到極樂世界可不可以?當然可以。但是阿彌陀佛四個字,究竟圓滿。

今天我們講【心經】的最大目的是你念佛的心態是什麼?

你處世待人的心態是什麼?

若是處世待人「心無罣礙」,念佛能「遠離顛倒夢想,究竟涅槃,無有恐怖」,那你現在就在極樂世界。

佛法它是實踐。佛法它絕對不是學術,它也不是一門學問。

在那裡實踐呢?就在你的日常生活,一舉一動中。再來是講是「大明咒,是無上咒,是無等等咒」。我想這個大家都懂。

大明咒」,大光明,光明的磁場。這個光明到遍虛空,遍法界,整個宇宙都在光明的磁場當中,這就是自己的佛性。

是無上咒」,剛剛講無上正等正覺,「無上咒」是成佛的磁場,完全圓滿成佛的磁場。

是無等等咒」,就是沒有跟它在一樣的了,就等於無上,究竟圓滿。

能除一切苦,真實不虛」。前面講過「行深般若波羅密多」的時候,「能除一切苦」。各位想一想,怎麼除一切苦?

整本【心經】就是講「無所得」。你要知道,你沒有失去,你也沒有得到。你就安心了,你叫佛菩薩,你叫「清涼月」。所以「無所得」是我們修行的目標。

怎麼個「無所得」?想都不要想,一切放下。

所以後面講「真實不虛」,「」是一真法界,絕對沒有虛妄。「」是清清楚楚,明明白白。「不虛」,表示不是戲論。

真實不虛」表示你的佛性無量無邊劫都不會消失。你覺悟的那一剎那,就是你會看到無量無邊劫的狀態,原來是一場夢,是假的。最後你看到破無明的狀態是「真實不虛」。你真的「無所得」,你就破無明了。
