Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 37

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with, “When chanting Amitabha to the state of the mind is purified of defiling illusion, you will know immediately how to make the decision.”)

In the Sutra text: Omniscient penetrative ability with crystal clear perception that the nature of the Five Skandhas are absent of inherent existence. So, release oneself from all obstructions caused by suffering and misfortune. Next, we are going to explain thetrue factsaboutFive Skandhas – the five composition elements of our existence as all material phenomena, feeling, thinking, mental formation and consciousness.

All materialistic phenomena are very important.  It is about all the sight-seeing by eyes that represents all materiality. We abbreviate as “material”. Situations as immense dust which we can see them in our daily living; the simplest circumstance is your body, the metabolism in your body.

Metabolism is what sort of variability? It is also categorized as materiality.

How does it transform? It transforms from the mind.

It is exactly the fluctuation of your thought, so your body will have variation. If your thought exists no fluctuation, it does not change. We need to pay special attention to this point.

Therefore, the phenomena of “birth, aging, sickness and death” of many people is surely going to happen. But there are also many without the phenomena of “birth, aging, sickness and death”.   Does the one has no phenomena of “birth, aging, sickness and death” exist in our world? Yes, there is.  Surely there is some, only that you do not know.

Why?

1. Your mind has not purified, you are unable to perceive this kind of purify condition.

2. You are too anxious and too troubled regarding life, also cannot perceive it.

Here is an example: Does the open space and our great Earth have variation? We and the earth, for several million years the most happening are earthquakes and mountain building, and only then there is a bit change. However, you are unable to detect the open space.

When we speak about sky space fifty thousand years ago or a million years ago – are they the same?

Frankly speaking, it is different every second, but you are unaware of it, this is because your mind is too unobservant. Therefore, as I have just mentioned “birth, aging, sickness and death”, when a person gets up in the morning till the night, one thought rises and one thought falls, this is called “birth, aging, sickness and death”. Secondly, your body’s metabolism is also called “birth, aging, sickness and death”.  If not we – the people from birth up until now, it would be impossible to fall ill.

Where does ill from? It is regarding matters you start with anxiety, start to have many different expectations, imagination, and attachments; then starting to fall ill.

There are many kinds of illnesses; there is physical illness and mental illness. Frankly speaking, physical and mental illness both manifest from your thoughts. The average person can sense the surface phenomena of “birth, aging, sickness and death” but it is not easy for one to go this deep: precisely about what we have just mentioned if your mind is motionless then there will be no phenomena of “birth, aging, sickness and death”.  It is hard for average people to be aware of it.

One is thinking where one’s mind is located?

Secondly, how can the mind be motionless?

In the former Sutra explaining, we talked about the condition of omniscient penetrative ability with crystal clear perception. If you are a person with wisdom who regards the life of the universe with crystal clarity, then you can control this phenomena of “birth, aging, sickness and death”. The Heart Sutra talks about Prajna Paramita (perfection of transcendent wisdom), which precisely means after one has wisdom, one can control one’s life and death.

Why do we start talking from all material phenomena? All material phenomena refers to worldly possessions including your body. If you can control this, your thoughts will gradually be purified of defiling illusion.

Feelings (towards all materialistic phenomena) in general refers to your sense as your feelings. Feeling cannot be classified as Mental Dharma; it can only classify as a kind of intuition effect.

How does this come to be? It is because of you give rise to delusional thought and attachment regarding these impurities – as we speak of the world of materiality, and thus results in this.

For example, tonight we have gathered together to have a group meal, and every plate of food you have a different feeling. In that case, you generate an issue that is precisely good and bad, like and dislike. Whether you like or dislike, nothing good can be said about it; it completely belongs to a feeling and this kind of feeling will cause your discrimination and attachment, this is where the problem. If a person is without discrimination, one also does not have attachment. If a person has attachment, then one surely has discrimination.

Why? One wants to discriminate between right or wrong, good or bad, beautiful or ugly.

This society has brought us this concept. This society is a vat of acquired bad habits, an assembly of the concepts of “right and wrong, good and bad, beautiful and ugly, so on and so forth”; it is the fountainhead of delusional thought and attachment.

Speaking further in-depth, where does this kind of feeling come from? It is produced from your mind not understanding the truth about the universe.

大家可以看到經文「照見五蘊皆空,度一切苦厄,」我記得,「度一切苦厄」上回已講過。下面我們要談的是:「五蘊」-色、受、想、行、識,的真相。

這個「」字很重要。「」我們講,一切色塵,代表一切物質現象。我們簡稱是「物質」。這個塵沙的狀態,我們在日常生活都可以看到,最簡單的情況,就是你的身體,你的身體裡有新陳代謝。

新陳代謝是什麼變化?它也屬物質。

那它怎麼變?它由心來變。

就是你的念頭波動,你的身體才有變化。你如果念頭沒有波動,它不變化的。這個我們要特別注意。

所以很多的人,「生老病死」他是一定要發生的。但是也有很多人,沒有「生老病死」。這沒有「生老病死」的人,是不是在我們這個世界上有?是,有的,絕對有的,只是你不知道。

為什麼?

  • 你的心不清淨,你沒有辦法感受到它這種清淨的狀態。
  • 你對於生活太焦慮,太煩惱,也沒有辦法感受到。

我們舉個例來說:這虛空大地有沒有變化?我們跟大地,地球幾百萬年來,了不起地震、造山運動,才有一點變化。可是「虛空」你察覺不到。我們講五萬年前的天空,一百萬年前的天空,有沒有一樣?

老實說,分分秒秒都不一樣,但是你不覺得。你的心太粗了。所以我剛剛講「生老病死」,一個人早上起來到晚上,一個念頭生,一個念頭滅;叫「生老病死」。第二,你身體上的新陳代謝,也叫「生老病死」。不然我們人出生到現在為止,不可能生病的。

病怎麼來的?你對於事物開始焦急,開始有很多不同的狀態,不同的幻想,不同的執著,那開始生病。

病有很多種:有身體的病,有精神的病。老實說,這個身體和精神的病,是從你念頭變現的。我講這一段,一般人都可以查覺到表面的「生老病死」,但是他不容易深入這一層,就是我們剛剛講的你的心如果不動,就沒有「生老病死」。但一般人查覺不出來。他在想我的「心」到底在那裡?第二,如何不動。

前幾次來聽經的朋友,都有聽到一個狀態,那就是「照見」。如果你是有智慧的人,你對宇宙人生清清楚楚,那你就能控制這個「生老病死」。《心經》上面不是講「般若波羅密」,就是有了智慧,就能控制生死。

所以我們為什麼要從「色」先開始講?「色」是身外,包括你的身體。你如果能控制這個,你的念頭就慢慢的清淨;就這樣子。

這個「」,一般而言,俗人講的「感受」就是你的感覺。感覺不能屬心法,它只能屬於一種「直覺的作用」。

那這個東西怎麼來的?是因為你對於這個色塵,我們講物質界,產生妄想執著而造成的。

我們舉例譬如:今天我們大家聚餐、吃東西,每一樣都有不同的感受,那你產生一個問題,就是好壞喜惡;你喜歡或討厭或不怎麼樣,這完全屬於感受。這種感受,造成你的分別和執著,是這個問題。因為一個人,如果不分別,他的執著也沒有。如果這個人有執著,他分別一定有。

為什麼?他要分別;是非、善惡、好壞、美醜。

社會帶給我們一個觀念,它是一個染缸,它是:是非、善惡、美醜,這種觀念的集合;它是妄想、執著的發源地。

如果你要講深一點,這種感覺從那裡來的?從你內心不了解宇宙的真相產生的。
