Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 51

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with, “So, everyone goes home and put this into practice in your mind. Otherwise, hearing all of this and not practicing does not work.”)

Next, we explain:  No existence of the realms of the eyes, up to and including no existence of the realms of consciousness.  For all of you to understand the condition of the Prajna Paramita Sutra, first look at the word “no” which can be explained with multiple meanings:

(1) It is precisely without attachment.

(2) It is non-existing, but also represents the modes of existing. I trust that all of you may not understand this meaning.

Why do we now see the world in modes of existing? Here it exists, there it also exists; “people, matters, places, objects”, “women and men”; all exist. If you use this way of thinking, you are not using your Prajna (wisdom). Instead, you are using all materialistic phenomena, feelings, thinking, mental formation, and consciousness the five composition elements of your existence Five Skandhas way to think.

Here, Sutras talk about how the nature of Five Skandhas are the absence of inherent existence; if you use the secular way of thinking then Five Skandhas are all existing; this is where the trouble is from. Today, we have incessant afflictions is precisely because we think that everything is the mode of existence. You work hard to earn money and you can get it. Having a disturbance at work or an unpeaceful livelihood, and you will have a feeling. Regarding “birth, aging, sickness and death” you will have a feeling. Truthfully speaking, after you study this Heart Sutra, you will feel comfortable in your mind. These phenomena are delusional thoughts caused from your attachment. If you feel that these things are unreal, then congratulations you have extricated yourself. If you think it is real, I guarantee you will enjoy it slowly and suffer through it.

Therefore, within this enjoyment and enduring, there are many different phases that exhibit your different kinds of attachments. For instance: When we eat a meal, sometimes you want to think, pick and select. To what extent will you be happy and satisfied?

Honestly speaking, things can never be happy and to your satisfaction. You may think about the past, or think about the present, or think about the future; but whatever you think, it is impossible to be according per your wishes.

Why not? Your way of thinking, looking at things, saying and doing still use the concept of Five Skandhas are all existing and are not the nature of absence of inherent existence. We are going to understand this concept from here. Now we start to explain: No existence of the realms of the eyes, up to and including no existence of the realms of consciousness.

This realm of eyes refers to a scientist speaking about the optic nerve. You think it is real, then you are wrong. It is the continuous images of creation (beginning) and extinction (ending) running 900 times in an instant.

How to explain this? If you watch the shooting of a gun with a high-speed camera, I had mentioned this before, the bullet leaves from the muzzle of the gun to hit the target, such short distance, however for us to see it as an instant. When you look at it through a high-speed camera, every extract is static and segments – this proves that images are unreal.

Image (phenomenon) is the misconception manifested from your mind, and this misconception has brought you measureless and boundless attachment. Speaking further onwards, it brings you measureless and boundless afflictions. Therefore, what we see from our physical eyes are surely not the first true phenomenon which has already passed through three reflexes. So, what we see are unreal images after delusional thought and attachment. For instance: Today explaining the Sutra, here at present there are many people; looking at everyone’s condition – with your physical vision you see their skin. If you have divine vision or Heavenly vision, you can see through to the internal organs. If you are an Arhat with wisdom vision, and you can see the condition of selflessness and without individual existence. If you are a Bodhisattva with Dharma vision, you can see the condition of the ion’s creation (rising) and extinction (falling).

There are many kinds of Bodhisattvas; if you are a Bodhisattva who has attained the first stage of the joy of Mahayana Bodhisattva development (as in the 41st level within the 52 levels of cultivation who has realized intrinsic truth with unmoved mind) and you have already eradicated the unenlightened condition, then what you see are the fluctuations of the mind. If you have eradicated all 41 grades of the unenlightened conditions and become a Buddha, then you would see that nothing is there, even “thought” does not exist.

接下來講:「無眼界,乃至無意識界」,各位想要瞭《般若經》的狀態,首先看這個無字。「」字做多重解釋:

  • 就是不執著。
  • 表示說它雖沒有,又表現有,這一層意思我相信各位不一定能懂。

為什麼?我們現在看到世間的一切都是「有」?這也有,那也有,人事地物都有,男男女女都有。你要是用這樣的方式想,你不是用般若。你是用「色、受、想、行、識」。

它這裡講「五蘊皆空」,你如果用世俗的叫五蘊皆「有」,這個很麻煩。我們今天之所以有煩惱,煩惱不斷,就是認為什麼東西都「有」。你努力賺錢,你就得到。你工作上有困擾或者生活不安定,你有感受,或「生、老、病、死」你有感受。說真話你讀了這個【心經】,你心裡就舒服。

這一切「」,就是你執著造出來的妄想。這個東西你要是覺得它是假的,那恭喜你,你就解脫了。你如果認為它是真的,我就保證你慢慢的享受。

所以這個享和受裡面,它有很多種不同的層次。像這種不同的層次,就是不同的執著。譬如說:我們吃餐飯,有的時候你會想,你要挑,你要選,你要到一個什麼樣的程度,你才會順心滿意?

說真話,那不可能順心滿意,或者你想過去,想現在,想未來,你怎麼想也不可能如意。

為什麼不如意?你的想法、看法、說法、做法,你還是五蘊皆有,不是「五蘊皆空」。我們從這個地方瞭解。現在就開始說「無眼界,乃至無意識界」。

這個「」的意思,我們一般科學家講:視神經,視覺的神經系統。你以為它是真的,那你就錯了。它是一剎那九百生滅的相續相。

這話怎麼講?你如果用快速照相機來照。上次我曾提過,你看那子彈從那槍口打到目標,短短的距離,我們看起來一剎那。你用快速照相機看的時候,它是每一個片段靜止的,是分段的,這就證明「相」是假的。

「相」是你內心產生的錯覺,這個錯覺帶給你無量無邊的執著。如果再進一步講,無量無邊的煩惱。所以我們眼睛肉眼所看到的,絕對不是第一次的真相,是已經經過反射三次。所以看到的是執著、妄想以後的假相。譬如說:今天講經,在座很多人。我們看到每個人的狀態,如果你是肉眼,你看到的是表面皮膚。你如果是天眼,天界的眼,透視的,你看到的是內臟。你如果是阿羅漢叫慧眼,你看到的是無我的狀態,沒有個體的存在。你如果是菩薩叫法眼,你看到的是離子生滅的狀態。

菩薩有很多種,如果你是登地的菩薩,圓教初住破無明,那你看到的是念頭的波動。如果你四十一品無明都斷盡了,成佛了,那你看到的是什麼都沒有,念頭也不存在。
