Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 57

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with: You have attachment to these phenomena then it becomes “you or I, right or wrong, people, matter, places, object, virtuous or evils, mountains and rivers, earth” – all manifested.)

Therefore, this state of no unenlightened condition, also no ending of the unenlightened condition, the word ending expresses “not having”. Even the thought of no unenlightened condition one also cannot have. In the beginning, referring to no unenlightened condition, Guan-Yin Bodhisattva is afraid you have attachment. Also, no ending of the unenlightened condition, means that it does not have no unenlightened conditions of the sort.

All of you think this over; this mode of existing is not possible to express through language and writing.

Just like how we speak of “air”. Is it there? Yes.

How do you know?

If we went back a thousand years ago, to speak of the air that we are breathe in, would you believe it then?

Now that we have scientific knowledge, of course we believe that air exists and what we breath in is air. Like this kind of question, ordinarily in these situations there would have been no way for us to think about this because it belongs to the unimaginable and inconceivable realm of truth. The so called “inconceivable’” means we cannot use language and words or common and average thinking activity to explain it.

Regarding this kind of situation, how are we able to enter it?

It is simple; relax with all things, do not be bothered with it and have no attachment to it, then you enter. Just like receiving a therapeutic massage, if you cannot relax, regardless of how skillful the therapist is it will not work. You need to relax and give rise to pleasure, and when the sore spots are being touched, you feel overjoyed. The soreness becomes a kind of phenomenon.

In this case, how does this phenomenon come into being? Frankly speaking, one does not have the concept of this body, then one would feel joy. If you have the body concept, then when the sore spot is pressed, it aches awfully and is impossible to bear. Or as a person at the point of one’s death, your concept is that I am going to be finished; you will surely die. These thoughts exist every day during our daily life.

How do you remove the unenlightened condition?  By not making life difficult for yourself every day but, remembering it is not being undisciplined. The so called “not making life difficult for yourself” is just like setting attachment against yourself. If today you let the delusional thought pass, then there is no delusional thought. For instance: attachment, delusional thought of your body, the “I” or others, right or wrong – let them all pass; do not hold on to it and have no attachment to it. Honestly speaking, after practicing for approximately two to three months, your life will transform; you will no longer feel unwell and eventually these attachments will gradually disappear.

A person in this world has a goal, everyone has. Of course, there are people without goals, who we are not discussing for the time being; instead we will discuss those with goals, who come in many kinds, as I want to do things this way, or I want to do this or that; if this condition of “I” is under the unenlightened condition, then this “I” will generate a function.

What kind of function? It is being unable to free oneself of worldly worries. It seems like there is always something to confine you, to restrict you from doing this or that; every day you become more and more narrow, and at the end of your life you become so narrow that you become only a spot, when this spot disappears that is the moment of your reincarnation.

所以這「無無明,亦無無明盡」,「」當什麼?「」表示沒有。連「沒有無明」這個念頭也不能有。

前面講「無無明」,他怕你執著。「亦無無明盡」,也沒有「沒有無明」這回事。

各位想一想,這個「有」的時候,不一定語言文字可以表達。

就像我們講空氣,你說有沒有?有。

你怎麼知道的,怎麼曉得的?

如果我們回到一千年前,跟你講這個空氣,我們在呼吸,你相信嗎?

現在我們是有科學知識,當然相信有空氣,我們呼吸的就是空氣。所以像這些問題,這些狀態,我們平常都沒有辦法想,因為它屬於無法想像,不可思議的法界。所謂「不可思議」就是不能用語言文字或普通一般的思想行為去解釋的。

對於這樣的狀態,我們要怎麼樣才能進入?

很簡單,凡事放鬆,你不計較,不執著,你就進入。就像你給人家推拿,你要不放鬆,他怎麼推也沒有用。你要放鬆,你產生樂趣,你被推到痛的地方,你覺得樂不可支。痛就變成一種現象。

那這個現象是怎麼產生?老實講,他沒有這個身體的觀念,他才會樂。如果你有身體的觀念,壓到它痛的要死要活的,不可能的。或人要死,你的觀念是我要完了,你是死定了。所以這些念頭在我們日常生活當中,每天都有。

你怎麼把無明拿掉?就是你每一天不跟自己過不去,但記住,它不是放縱性。所謂「跟自己過不去」,就是跟自己的執著對立。如果你今天,「妄想」讓它過去,沒有妄想。譬如說:身體的執著、妄想人我是非,讓它過去;不抓住它,不執著它。老實說,你大概兩三個月,你的生命就轉變了,你就再也不會難受。最後這個執著也慢慢地消失。

人在這個世間上,他有一個目標。每一個人都有。當然沒有目標的人,暫時不談。我們今天談有目標的人。有目標的人有很多種,我想怎麼做,我想怎樣,怎樣…。「我」的狀態如果是在「無明」的當中的話,那這個「我」就產生作用。

什麼作用?無法解脫。總有一個東西好像限制你;這也限制,那也限制,這也不成,那樣也不成。每天越來越狹窄,到最後你的人生就變成只有一個點。當這個點消失的時候,也就是你投胎轉世的時候。
