Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 40

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with,”Does Buddha have materialistic phenomena, feeling, thinking, mental formation? No, he does not.)

Next talking about consciousness; there are four kinds:

  1. The first five consciousness are “eyes, ears, noise, tongue, body” which produces “sight, sound, scent-smell, taste and touch”.
  2. The sixth sub-consciousness is the perception and discriminative ability of the mind.
  3. The seventh is attachment called Manas consciousness.
  4. The eighth is the Alaya consciousness which is the memory file. This file is very exquisite; where every bit and all the trivialities from generation to generation are filed. Frankly speaking, after something is done we have already forgotten, but this Alaya consciousness does not forget and all images imprint exactly like a filing storage warehouse; from immeasurable existence of world-periods (eons) up until today, it is completely clear of all phenomena.

What does it record? Illusions.

A person’s stubbornness is which consciousness? The Manas consciousness – the seventh consciousness as I want to do it this way, I want to do it that way, I must be that way, I ought to be what way; these are stubbornness.

Ancient people constantly spoke about “choosing what is good and holding fast to it.” They only chose what is good; however, Buddhism is “choosing what is pure and good holding fast to it”. “To persist in pureness” means without defilement.

You can ask anyone at random – whether you have purified of defiling illusion in this life? They are unclear about this.

Why? They have defilement – delusional thought and attachment.

Then what is the sixth consciousness, which we often describe as the sub-conscious; what is it? It is the delusional thought on this.

This “delusional”, why speak of it as delusional? It is unreal and illusory, and basically has no track to follow as shadows and images. If we live in delusional thought and attachment, I am telling you, you have treated yourself wrongfully; you will also die wrongfully, be alive wrongfully, be aged wrongfully, and be sick wrongfully.

So, what is the meaning of life then? It is very simple, you do not have this dream anymore; stop it, then your life has meaning.

Why? You will no longer worry about any matters.

  1. You will no longer need to sleep, and you do not feel tired at all.
  2. You do not need to eat anything.

Before the venerable Monk Guang-Qin was this way, he had no need for eating. He was reluctantly to eat a piece of fruit; he was showing everyone that he was the same as everyone by still eating something.

  1. Absolutely do not have any afflictions.

To the average person, it appears one has become superman. In fact, that is not so; everyone can be this way. The problem with our education is that it does not include the method for how to become enlightened. So, the first time we hear it, we feel strange:

What is this enlightenment about?

How should I apply it in daily life?

Frankly speaking, when you relax you have already applied it. The key question is how to relax?                                                                                                                                                             It is relaxing any time and any place without others and without the self. It is not to ignore everything; it is truly to relax the mind. For instance, you sit here for a couple hours, and during these two hours your mind is composed.

  1. You did not doze off.
  2. Your mind was not in a mess.
  3. Your mind did not search everywhere for a target.

You have this kind of ability; and if within a whole day, you can have ten minutes to be this way, then I congratulate you because you will have 1% chance to detach from life and death phenomena.

Each one of us lives in this world to do what, do you know? No, you have no idea.

You ask a person where you come from? One does not know.

What to do in this life? One barely knows enough.

Where do you go? Unknown.

One who has religious belief will answer on the side of their religious belief. One without religious belief will put trust in oneself. There is another kind who does not believe in anything and does not believe in oneself, and they live in confusion every day.

This kind of phenomena is what? It is all materialistic phenomena, feeling, thinking, mental formation, and consciousness. This consciousness one has not yet developed.  Without development, one does not have wisdom.

What is wisdom? The mind is like a mirror that can reflect everything in clarity and one can see things clearly, and certainly does not arise with afflictions and doubt. In that case then, it is correct.

色、受、想、行、識」,「」;通稱講起來四種:

前五識:「眼、耳、鼻、舌、身」,「色、聲、香、味、觸」。

第六識-潛意識,意和識。

第七執著叫末那識。

第八阿賴耶識-記憶體存檔。這個檔案很妙,你生生世世一點一滴、雞毛蒜皮、全部入檔。老實講,我們有些事情做過了就忘光,但這阿賴耶識它不會忘記,全部落入印相,就像檔案資料庫,無量劫到今天所有一切現象它完全清楚。

那它記的是什麼?幻覺。

這人的固執是那一識?末那識,第七識:我要這樣做,我要那樣做,我必須那樣,我應該如何,這是固執。

古人常講:擇善固執。他只擇善。佛教不是,擇善,擇淨。固執淨,表示沒有污染。

你隨便問一個人,你這一生清不清淨?他搞不清楚。

為什麼?他有污染。

什麼污染?妄想和執著。

那第六意識,我們常講潛意識。潛意識是什麼?妄想這個。

「妄」,為什麼說它妄?假的,虛幻,是根本沒有跡象可循影子、影像。若我們生活在執著和妄想裡,我告訴你冤枉,死也冤枉、活也冤枉、老也冤枉、病也冤枉。

那你說,人生的意義在那裡?很簡單,你把這個夢不要做了、停了,你的人生就叫有意義。

為什麼?你不會再為任何事情擔憂了。

  • 你不會有睡眠,你不會累。
  • 你不須要吃東西。

以前廣欽老和尚就這樣,他不須要吃了。他勉強吃個水果,做個樣子給大家看一看;表示說我和你們大家都差不多,我還吃東西。

  • 他絕對沒有煩惱。

這個一般人講起來,好像超人。實際是每個人做得到,問題是我們的育當中,沒有覺悟的方法。所以我們第一次聽起來,覺得很奇怪。

這個東西到底是怎麼一回事?

怎麼應用到生活上?

老實講,你放鬆,你就應用。那關鍵就在:怎麼放輕鬆。你隨時隨地沒有自己,這不是忽略;他是真的心裡面放鬆。

譬如說:你坐在這裡兩個鐘頭,這兩個鐘頭你的心是定的。

  • 沒有瞌睡。
  • 你的心不七上八下。
  • 你的心不到處找目標。

你能有這個能力,你一天當中有十分鐘,能這樣做到,那我恭喜你,大概離開生死有百分之一的機會。

我們每個人生活在這個世界上,要做什麼你知道?什麼都搞不清楚。

你問他從那裡來?他不知道。

這一生做什麼?勉強。

到那裡去?不知道。

有宗教信仰的,他說到宗教信仰那邊去。沒有宗教信仰的,相信自己。還有一種人,誰都不相信;也不相信自己,每一天就糊里糊塗的過。

這種現象是什麼?色、受、想、行、識。這「」字,他沒有開發。沒有開發,他沒有智慧。

什麼叫智慧?心像一面鏡子,照得清清楚楚,看得清清楚楚,絕對不生煩惱跟疑惑,那就對了。
