Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 61

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

(Last week we ended with, “So, hearing the Sutra explained is known as learning of the Sutra and called an experience for oneself. To see things is not seeing, it is through learning and to experience for oneself.”)

Before, the Buddha explained his teachings in different dimensional worlds because all living beings have different attachments. In some worlds, beings have sharp (“sharp” meaning sensitive) noses. When you invite one for a meal, if they smell a flavor and become enlightened. Our beings here have a sharp hearing nature, which means ears are extremely sensitive, so hearing can be penetrated.

Some people when they hear something good will turn it into bad, this means one has an overly worried mind.

Some will hear something not so good and then turn it to good; this is called having an “unorganized mind”.

Some people after hearing for a while do not hear anything, this is called having an “unenlightened condition mind”.

When we hear with full concentration and have no distracting thought when hearing, after it enters the hearing faculty that pure condition launches a sympathetic response with your Buddha-nature. This is important. This hearing is not a normal way of hearing.

The normal way is simple where one goes to school to learn. When you are interested in something you hear it, if it is not of your interest then you let it be and try to get out of class quickly.

The teaching of the Buddha is not this way; hearing Buddha’s teaching is wonderful, you hear all with the purified mind of defiling illusion.

What does it mean? Your mind does not arise with thought, but you hear everything clearly.

When all of you has listened the Sutra explaining for a while, if you let go of all when hearing, I am telling you, after hearing a couple of words you can become enlightened and you understand the true facts about the universe. If you have not let go, there are distracted thoughts in your mind, then I am telling you, you will never able to understand it from hearing.

If you have let go of all to hear, never mind listening to Sutra, even listening to opera you will become enlightened too.

Why? When listening to the rising and falling of the sound of opera singing what you hear is called the fundamental nature behind the sound expression and not the surface of the song. Hearing Sutra explaining is also the same way; you hear the fundamental essence of the Sutra. If you apply the same way to handle all matters, you will enter the fundamental essence of all matters, and you will never feel tired no matter which way you do it. For instance, if you are a businessman you invest and earn money, and however way you handle it, you do not feel tired. Also, if you have children and grandchildren with numbers up to 100 or even 1000, you will not feel tired.

Why? Your mind will fundamentally not be concerned about it.

At present, your biggest problems are the concerns you have; these concerns are the source of life and death because your mind follows the ups and downs. Therefore, many people have said that learning to become Buddha, the first thing one should be is without affection (emotion). Do not misunderstand this, being without affection (emotion) is when one is unmoved regarding affection (emotion). Affection (emotion) is a delusion; when you are delusional then your consciousness will be confused, and your thoughts will become unclear. When your thoughts are not clear, the function between your central nervous system and automatic nervous system with your brain are completely non-functional, and you are completely captivated by external activity phenomena.

There is a joke, where all people who practiced Dhyana (Zen) meditation attained good results.

Someone said: “More than ten years ago, I saw someone owed me five dollars and one still have not paid me back yet.”

He initiated this delusional thought and while he saw this phenomenon, he was confused by the phenomena and still had attachment to it. If your mind is purified of defiling illusion, you will see your lives from age to age across infinite existence during world-periods and you will not be confused by these phenomena. Although there exists infinite time and infinite space, these phenomena are a dream. We talked about this before, in dreams there exists “birth, aging, sickness and death”, exists unenlightened condition, exists eyes, ears, noise, tongue, body, and mind; exists sights, sounds, smells, taste, and all illusory phenomena. But if you realize it is unreal during your dream, then I congratulate you that you have succeeded.

所以佛以前說法,在各個不同的世界說法,眾生執著不一樣。有的國度,鼻根很利。所謂「利」,就是敏感。你請他吃頓飯,他聞到那個香味就覺悟了。我們這裡眾多耳根很利,耳朵很敏感,聽話聽的是入木三分。

有的人是這樣,好聽的他聽成壞的,太「憂心」了。

不好聽的,他聽成好的,這叫「散漫心」。

有一種人,聽了半天沒有聽,這個叫「無明心」。

我們聽而無聽,聽進去以後,它那個清淨的狀態跟你的佛性起了共鳴,這個重要。這可不是普通的聽。

普通很簡單,去學校上課,學習這個,學習那個。有興趣的,聽聽,沒興趣的,算了,趕快下課。

佛法不是,佛法的聽很妙,聽什麼都在清淨心。

這什麼意思?心不起念,但是你完全聽明白。

各位聽經,來這裡一個半鐘頭,你是放下一切來聽,我告訴你,你一,兩個字,你就開悟了,你就了解宇宙的真相。如果你沒有放下,你腦筋有雜念,我告訴你,你永遠聽不會。

不要說聽佛經,聽人家唱歌仔戲你也會開悟。

為什麼?歌仔戲聲音的起滅,你聽到的那個叫音性,性質你聽到而不是聽到表面的歌。我們聽經也是,聽到經的本體,你這樣來做事,你會做到事情的本體,你怎麼做都不會累。譬如:你是個商人,你投資,你賺錢,怎麼做都不累。你有兒女,有孫子,一百個,一千個,你都不會累。

為什麼?你的心根本不被它牽掛。

現在最大的問題,就是你有牽掛,這個牽掛是一種生死的根源,你的心會跟著起伏。所以很多人講,學佛第一要無情。各位不要誤會,無情就是對於情,絕不動。情是迷,你情迷了,意就亂,你念頭就不清楚。那你這個念頭不清楚,你的中樞神經,自律神經跟大腦之間的作用,完全沒有,你被境界完全吸引了。

以前有個笑話,人家都在禪定,大家都有很好的所謂果証。有一個人,他說:「唉呀,十幾年前,某某人欠我五塊錢,還沒有還給我」。他就會妄想。他雖然看到現象,但他被現象所迷,他還執著。如果你的心清淨,你看到無量劫來你的生生世世。完全不會被這些現象所迷。原來這些現象雖有無量的時間,無量的空間,但是這是一場夢。我們講夢中有「生、老、病、死」,有「無明」,有「眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意」,「色、聲、香、味、觸、法」;但你做夢時,知道它是假的,那恭喜你,你成功了。
