Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch: Introduction (Part 3)

Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch: Introduction (Part 3)

(Excerpt from the Introduction of Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch,expounded by Master Shen-Long)

For those who chant the name of Amitabha, even though it is very difficult to attain the state of there is not a single thing originally, Where can there be any dust?

You still need to understand the state of ‘chanting Amitabha by wholeheartedly concentrating the mind without scattering, absolutely apart from phenomena, to obtain the underlying truth of all things within Buddha-nature.’ It is exactly the Sixth Patriarch’s statement of:

Bodhi fundamentally is not a tree.

明鏡亦非檯;    Clear mirror (wisdom) is not a stand;

There is not a single thing originally,

Where can there be any dust (affliction).

The method of chanting Amitabha of the Pure Land School or ‘Chanting Amitabha Samadhi’ has three tiers:

The first tier is chanting 24 hours thoroughly without distracting thought. This is the preliminary step, where your illusions and temptation of things seen and thought have not entirely ended.

The second tier is ‘chanting Amitabha wholeheartedly concentrating the mind without scattering’, to be rid of your false views and temptations of things seen and thought. Chanting Amitabha to the state that your illusions and temptation of things seen and thought have ceased finally.

The third tier is ‘wholeheartedly concentrating the mind without scattering, absolutely apart from phenomena, to obtain the underlying truth of all things within Buddha-nature’. This means you have eradicated one grade of the unenlightened condition and attained one grade of dharma body (embodiment of truth). This is precisely the same attainment of the Sixth Patriarch: There is not a single thing originally, where can there be any dust?
