Stop The Dispute

Stop The Dispute

(Excerpt from the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch, expounded by Master Shen-Long, Chapter 1 Cultivation Cause, pg. 67)

[Sutra Text] The Patriarch said again: “In the past, when the First Patriarch Great Master Bodhidharma first came to this land China, people did not believe in him, hence he passed on this robe and bowl representing the embodiment of faith to be handed down from generation to generation. The Dharma (teaching) is transmitted from Buddha mind to Buddha mind. In all cases, this all relies on self-comprehension and self-liberation. Since the ancient Buddha, every honorific Buddha only passed on the fundamental essence, and esoterically passed this down between the Patriarchs from their pure mind. Since the robe serves as a source of dispute, it should stop with you and do not pass it on further. If you pass it on, your life will hang by a thread. You must go quickly for I fear that people might harm you.”

 Explained by Master Shen-Long:

When the First Patriarch Great Master Bodhidharma first came to this land China, people did not believe in him, people found it hard to profess their faith in him and to fathom their minds. For a person without a higher level of the superior roots, it is hard to align themselves with the method of “immediate teaching” where enlightenment may be attained at once. Hence he passed on this robe and bowl representing the embodiment of faith to be handed down from generation to generation. Therefore, this cassock robe and the bowl was the embodiment of the doctrine. To have faith with a purified mind of defiling illusion raises the absolute fundamental reality therefore, the embodiment of faith is represented by this robe and bowl. These items have been passed down for six generations. The Dharma (teaching) is transmitted from an enlightened mind to validate that the other mind is the enlightened mind, it is done solely one on one and face to face.

In all cases, this all relies on self-comprehension and self-liberation, this is very important. This does not rely on either his comprehension and his liberation, or your comprehension and your liberation; it has to be my own comprehension and my own liberation. With regards to the Buddha Dharma (teaching), nobody can become enlightened on your behalf, nobody can become Buddha on your behalf. Everything is reliant on your own, what does this mean? Your self-nature is inherently pure, your self-nature is inherently with supreme enlightenment, your self-nature is inherently to free oneself of worldly worries.

Since the ancient Buddha, every honorific Buddha only passed on the fundamental essence, and esoterically passed this down between the Patriarchs from their pure mind. Since the robe serves as a source of dispute, it should stop with you and do not pass it on further, gives him a hint. Every Buddha only passes on the fundamental essence-the mind is inherently purified of defiling illusion. The Patriarchs esoterically passed this down between the Patriarchs from their pure mind, between the Zen Patriarchs reflect their enlightened insight from one to another, from one pure mind to another pure mind. It agrees implicitly with the inconceivable true nature of all things. For example, people who speak the same dialect can acquire full understanding of each other however, for an outsider it is hard to apprehend. One understands what is “esoteric”. It does not mean that there is some kind of secret because other people are unable to make sense of what meaning or what the principle one is hearing. If you can understand the truth therein, then you reflect an enlightened mind.

Most of the general population is rudely greedy, with attachments and are struggling for power. Since the robe serves as a source of dispute, people come for fame and benefit and one thinks that they will become the Patriarch if they possess this robe and alms’ bowl. The cassock robe and bowl should stop being passed after you (the Sixth Patriarch). If you keep passing the cassock robe and bowl, your life will be like the silk of the spider web suspended in the air, as though one is at death’s door. You should leave here at once, I am afraid someone will harm you!
