Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, Part 4

[Series of Master Shen-Long expounding on the Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom) Heart Sutra]

But how do you use it?

For instance, to everybody here listening to my talk, is your Prajna now present?

I do not believe so.

Why is it not present now? It is because you cannot control your subconscious, or what we often speak of as your so-called stream of consciousness. More scientifically, it is the fluctuation of your mind.

What is the fluctuation? When you see something good you activate likeness, and when you see something not good you will initiate annoyance; this is called a wave motion. This wave motion makes you unclear. Explaining further, a mind of yours should be like a mirror where all phenomena is reflected crystal clear from the mirror, but the mirror itself does not have the emotions of happiness, anger, sorrow and joy. Of course, I am not saying that one does not truly have emotions of “joy, anger, sorrow, happiness” as if one did not have affections and feelings, it is not like that; it is knowing you are not confused by it. When you are not confused, it activates a function.

What function? It is called going with the flow but not following the bad example of others.

You are not apart from society, you hang out together to have food and drink with them, however your mind is clear and you know when to do what; also, you are not in opposition with them, in addition you are to the satisfaction of all, and are also able to be at the urgent and important moments (as in moments of life or death), to help them.

How to help? There are two ways: one way is knowing where their ending place is after death, and in that instant, if they can accept your way of thinking and looking at things, then you may turn their thought successfully. The second way is before their life has ended, which is precisely this moment right now, you use an ingenious method to reveal their shortcomings, and let them self-awaken. This is a very simple method. However, the problem is that you need to be enlightened beforehand.

Regarding this “enlightenment”, it is seeing all phenomena clearly, as described in the Sutra text:

Omniscient penetrative ability with crystal clear perception that the nature of Five Skandhas (the five composition elements of our existence – all materialistic phenomena, feeling, thinking, mental formation and consciousness) are absent of inherent existence.

Omniscient penetrative ability is just like a light; originally this room is dark inside, but when you turn the light on, you can see everything in this room – this is the function of wisdom.

Crystal clear perception is without discrimination and attachment; it is different from the ordinary way of using the eye to see, it is the attitude of the mind without any defilements. This way seems difficult for the people of the modern era.

Why? It is because we have never had this kind of education before or been in touch with the Buddha teaching. There are two kinds of this form of education, either the religious way or the academic way.  Sometimes the religious way makes people feel conflicted.

Why? It’s because they are superstitious.

The academic way is more complicated, has too much terminology and names that are not easy for letting a person to become purified of defiling illusion. These are the problems of our modern era.

但是你怎麼用?

譬如:現在各位聽我這樣講,「般若」有沒有現前?我相信沒有。

那為什麼不會現前?主要來講,你不能伏住你的潛意識,我們常講所謂「意識流」。如果你要講得更科學一點,是你內心的波動。

什麼叫「波動」?看到這個事情你喜歡,那個不好的事情你討厭,叫「波動」。這個波動讓你不清楚。如果再講得深入,這個「心」應該像鏡子一樣,所有一切現象在鏡子裡面是照得清清楚楚,但是這個鏡子它是沒有喜怒哀樂的。當然我講的不是說你真的沒有「喜怒哀樂」,不是沒有情沒有感,不是的。你知道你不迷,你不迷就起作用。

起什麼作用?叫同流而不合污。

你跟社會大眾不脫節。你也跟他們一樣混吃混喝,可是你的心是清楚。你知道什麼時候該怎麼做,又不跟對方有對立,而且皆大歡喜;又能在緊要關頭,我講的緊要關頭是「生死」,在生死上可以幫他。

怎麼幫?兩個方法:一個方法知道他到那裡去報到。如果他在那個剎那能接受你的想法、看法,那就成功了,可以轉他的念頭。第二,是這個人還沒有命終以前,就是現在,你能把他的缺點用巧妙的方法顯現出來,讓他自覺。那這個是很簡單的方法,問題是你自己要「先」覺。

我們講這個「覺」,實際上就是「照見」;就是經文裡面講「照見五蘊皆空」。

」就像燈光。本來這個室內是黑的,你燈一打開,什麼都見到了,這是智慧的作用。

」是什麼?不加一點分別執著叫「」。不是那個眼睛看見的見,是沒有一點污染的這種心態。那當然這個現代人看起來好像很困難。

為什麼?我們從來沒有受過這樣子的教育,像「佛法」這種教育,我們從來沒有接觸過。大部份是兩種:不是宗教,就是學術。宗教有的時候令人反感。

為什麼?因為他迷信。

學術,複雜,名詞、名相太多,不容易讓清淨。這都是我們現代的問題。
